CL Group A Preview: Bayern v Napoli

I wrote a ‘real’ preview but the text disappeared when I published it, so here’s a very short version of what I said—

  • First match in Napoli was two weeks ago, Bayern conceded the first goal since Tennessee Ernie Ford was born, it ended 1-1
  • Since then, Bayern lost a wild one in Hannover and convincingly beat Ingolstadt and Nürnberg
  • Takashi Usami was the first Japanese to ever score a goal for Bayern (unless you count the chances former Hamburg striker Naohiro Takahara wasted)
  • Arjen Robben and Breno are still injured, Diego Contento is fit again after missing the match v Nürnberg
  • Daniel van Buyten and Bastian Schweinsteiger have been doubtful since Sunday but I assume they’ll be fit enough to play
  • Since the match, Napoli got a win, a draw and a loss in Italy
  • Their domestic season isn’t a great one (only 4 wins in 9 matches) but nothing is lost yet, it’s a very close Serie A and Juve, the league leaders, are only 5 points ahead with 29 matches to be played
  • It’s a weird season for them, they beat the great teams (Milan, Udinese) but lose against the weaker ones (Parma, Chievo)
  • Sometimes they beat the weak ones, though (Inter)
  • Marco Donadel and Miguel Britos are still injured
  • Mighty midfield midget Walter Gargano is also injured and will miss the match
  • Paolo Cannavaro is suspended after collecting 3 yellow cards in 3 CL matches
  • Goran Pandev might return
  • That’s the guy who eliminated Bayern with a last-minute goal last season
  • Bayern at home against Italian teams is shaky
  • Napoli away against German teams is solid as in they haven’t won there yet
  • The ref is Dutchman Björn Kuipers, his first Bayern and second Napoli (3-2 v Villarreal) match
  • Stats say that he prefers the home teams, they’re four times as likely to be awarded a penalty kick
  • No other CL team committed more fouls than Bayern so far
  • No other CL player suffered more than Franck Ribery so far
  • No other CL team has less shots on goal than Napoli
  • One of their four shots on target wasn’t successful (against City)
  • Yet they scored four goals already; Badstuber-esque
  • Bayern’s biggest European home loss was against an Italian squad (0-2 v Milan)
  • Thus, Bayern doesn’t suck at home
  • They don’t suck away either, by the way
  • Light blue shirts in a glowing red Allianz Arena make many angry
  • The probable lineups:

Rafinha – Boateng – Badstuber – Lahm

Gustavo – Schweinsteiger

Müller – Kroos – Ribery

Lavezzi – Hamsik

Dossena – Dzemaili – Inler – Maggio

Aronica – Campagnaro – Fernandez

de Sanctis
